I recently decided to find happiness in my own backyard. Since, for me, happiness means having a good drink I decided to tour my city in search of cocktails.
I have the pleasure of living in downtown Baltimore. Every once in a while I have to remind myself of why I love it here. You can get caught up on the negative and it becomes hard to see the beauty beyond the cracks.
I have an ongoing bucket list of bars and restaurants I want to visit across the country. I've found myself frustrated that Baltimore didn’t have more to offer by way of cocktail culture. Or does it? Perhaps everything I’m searching for is right in front of me and I don’t see it. Am I being too harsh on my hometown? There’s only one way to find out.
I decided to go for a walk.
My walk started at the waterfront of the inner harbor. It was a slow start as I stopped occasionally to take in the view and the breeze coming off the water. I was lucky to have some amazing weather guiding me that afternoon.
I strolled up the waterfront until I reached the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel, home of Apropoe’s.
This bar and restaurant is just off the lobby of the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel with a great view of the water. The bar is of decent size though I wish it faced the water rather than the hotel lobby. Granted this large broad room has numerous seating options from comfy couches to intimate tables. But I chose to sit at the bar and chat with the bartender.
My first question was “what’s up with the spelling of Apropoe?”.
The restaurants name is a nod to Edgar Allen Poe. Not unusual or unique in Baltimore. This city is probably best known for two things, the wire and Poe's home. I also wanted to ask my bartender, Josh, "what’s with all the televisions". Flat screens as far as the eye can see. But I chose to drink instead. That was afterall the reason I was there. And since I was at the place of Poe I decided to have The Raven.
The Raven - patron silver, cucumber basil simple syrup, housemade sour, club soda
Wait, a great tequila drink that isn’t a margarita? They do exist.
If I didn’t have the goal of hitting multiple establishments that afternoon, I would have sipped the day away with The Raven. I’m in love with cucumber and the tequila provides a simple, yet satisfying, twist on a gin & tonic. A very apropos cocktail.
Chocolate Cherry Noir (barrel aged) - grey goose cherry noir, luxardo maraschino liqueur, sweet vermouth, chocolate bitters.
If you’re looking for something a bit more girly, might I suggest the Chocolate Cherry Noir (say it with a kiss). It’s actually not as sweet as it looks; just the right amount of booze. Will no doubt make an appearance at the next girls night out.
I was a bit surprised how much I liked Apropoe’s. My first impression was that it reminded me of an airport bar. But after looking around a bit more I noticed a little library nook off to the side and a wall of metallic words like the magnetic kind you probably had on your fridge as a kid.
It’s a nice place to say “Welcome to Baltimore. It’s not always like The Wire.”
I'm a Baltimore gal that loves her home town almost as much as a good drink. A bit of a cocktail geek that loves the classics while experimenting with my own recipes. I'm home schooled and eager to learn more about the spirited world of cocktails.
