Brancamenta Chocolate Ice Cream

One of my favorite herbal liqueurs is Fernet-Branca. Known as “the bartender’s secret handshake”. Fernet-Branca is an herbaceous liqueur that ignites the palate and stimulates the soul. It’s immensely popular in Argentina, served in a tall glass of Coca-Cola. I just like it neat at the end of a great night out.

In 1960, the makers of Fernet-Branca created Brancamenta using the same blend of herbs and spices but with the addition of Piedmontese peppermint. The result is a cool and refreshing minty liqueur with a bitter, yet sweet finish.

Recently, I took a class on herbal liqueurs at one of our local bars. Our bartender / instructor mentioned seeing other establishments making Fernet-Branca ice-cream. I immediately thought of the bottle of Brancamenta sitting on my bar at home. How delicious would that crisp minty flavor taste in ice cream? And what goes better with mint than chocolate?

I searched all over for the perfect homemade ice cream recipe and chose to go with a simple and easy recipe adapted from Bigger Bolder Baking. It creates a great ice cream base that we will kick up a notch with the addition of chocolate and, of course, Brancamenta.

Brancamenta Chocolate Ice Cream

STEP 1:  Using an electric stand mixer or hand mixer, beat 1 pint (16oz or 450 ml) of Whipping Cream until cream thickens and stiff peaks form.

STEP 2: On a low setting, stir in 1 can of (14 oz or 400ml) condensed milk.

STEP 3: On a low setting, stir in 1 ½ oz (75 ml) Brancamenta.

STEP 4:  In the microwave, melt 2 oz. (60g) semisweet chocolate in 30 second intervals. Stir chocolate in between heating.

STEP 5: On a low setting, stir in melted chocolate. The chocolate will form “chips” as it cools.

STEP 6:  Still on a low setting, stir in 1 ½ tbsp of Unsweetened Cocoa Powder.

STEP 7: Pour into an airtight container. Allow to freeze overnight (approx.. 6-8 hours).

I love this recipe because it’s fast, but best of all your ice cream will be super creamy. The Brancamenta adds the perfect amount of mint flavor that pairs really well with the chocolate.
