Cocktail Crafty

The Brandy Revolution...or...Viva La Brandy

I feel like it's been forever since I've made a cocktail. I've been a bit of a bon vivant lately. It feels good to sit at home sipping tea and enjoying a day off.

Earlier this week my husband made the comment that we were out of liquors. "That can't be right," I said. After some inspection I found a mostly full bottle of Brandy hiding in the back. "What can I possibly make with Brandy?", he asks.

And that is how this blog post was created. Sometimes necessity breeds creativity.

The classic Brandy cocktail that should come to mind is the Sidecar.

1.5 oz Cognac

1 oz Cointreau

.5 oz Lemon Juice

Lemon twist garnish

Recipe from the Joy of Mixology

Of course, I have to give it my Cocktail Crafty twist:

Grapefruit Sidecar

Grapefruit Sidecar

1.5 oz Cognac

.5 oz Cointreau

.5 oz Shrub & Co. Grapefruit Shrub

.5 oz Lemon Juice

Grapefruit twist to garnish

Honestly, many fruit juices or fruit liqueurs would make for a great twist on the classic Sidecar. Try adding peach or blueberries. Have fun with it.

Now for a not so well known classic. I found this recipe while flipping through my Savoy Cocktail Book.

Quaker's Cocktail

1 oz Brandy

1 oz Rum

.5 oz Lemon Juice

1 bar spoon Raspberry Preserves

What do quakers have to do with cocktails? I don't know. But I was pleasantly surprised how well this drink turned out. It's a little on the strong side, so add more preserves if you like your drinks sweeter.

Randomness alert: We just happened to have raspberry preserves on hand because hubby found a recipe for kangaroo that required it. My husband loves trying new foods and ordered kangaroo online. How's kangaroo? Gets too tough to eat if you over cook it. Other than that, not too shabby. Won't be craving it any time soon though.

Well, that completes my post on brandy cocktails. (and apparently kangaroo)
